A properly built roof with good reliable roofing material can serve as decades. And some roofs, with more original options for the performance of the roof – for more than a hundred years.
Three features
We want the roof to protect us in the “Autopilot” mode. That is, we built a house – built a roof, performed all the roofing work, installed an excellent seamless drainage system. And now we only want to enjoy life under reliable protection. But, even with such an ideal version, the “pilot” sometimes has to control “the correctness of the course by which the plane flies”. Check the condition of the roof at least twice a year – after winter and at the beginning of autumn. A more thorough check of the roof must be performed after severe squalling winds and heavy rain.
This is not for us!
There are three main things that you need to pay attention to when performing roofing work.
1. Know everything in more detail about your roof. The roof, as a rule, consists of several layers of different materials. Each material performs its own specific task. For example, the purpose of the waterproofing of the roof is to prevent the penetration of moisture into the attic, under the roof of the building. Plywood serves to structural support of the roof frame. Knowing the structure of the roof and roof, it will be easier for you to understand the causes of breakdowns and fix the situation faster.
2. You need to pay attention not only to obvious water bodies on the roof, or the absence of tiles. You must also carefully check the seals and look for stains or corrosion, cracks, blocked gutters and drains, sticking out nails, rivets, screws, etc.
3. Be careful when you move along the roof. It might be better to crawl on all fours when examining and cleaning the roof. Thus, you are closer to the surface and can more easily detect damage or defects. In addition, this prevents you from a random step to a weak place and more damage in that place. If you go along a corrugated steel profile sheet, then it is advisable to walk along a conditional line of nails or screws. Subject to this rule, you will not damage the roofing material.
